Overview

Title: Tailor
Trained By: Beekeeper, Cobbler, Farmer, Leatherworker, Tailor

  • Tools needed: sewing kit, leather punch, scissors

Being a tailor is not as easy as you may think. Vendors do not sell cloth, yarn or thread. To be a tailor, you need to be able to make cotton and wool cloth if you want to have nice clothes and slaughter animals to get their hides for leather items.

Materials

Cloth

For many items, cloth is the tailor's essential material. Cloth can only be obtained by picking the cotton plant and turning it into balls of yarn then into bolts of cloth using the following procedure below.

25 cotton --> 10 yarn --> 4 bolts--> 200 cotton cloth --> 100 bandages

Picking cotton requires lumberjacking skill and is obtainable from many gardens. After you have your raw materials, you must find a spinning wheel to make the thread or yarn. Stand by the spinning wheel and use it. You will go to work turning 5 of your raw materials into 2 yarns or threads. Now take this to the loom to turn 5 yarns or threads into 2 bolts of cloth.

Once you have your bolts of cloth, you can either use your scissors on it or a sewing kit. If you use your scissors, it will cut up the bolt of cloth or folded cloth into bandages at a rate of 2 cloth for 1 bandage or 1 bolt for 25 bandages. The sewing kit will allow you to turn your folded cloth into many tailored items. To roll the cloth back into a bolt, double-click the folded cloth or use the sewing kit and select the appropriate menu item.

Wool

Wool is an essential part of the tailor's crafting kit. Many clothing items require wool cloth to make. Wool can only be obtained from sheep. To shear a sheep, use a dagger or skinning knife on a live sheep. It will not hurt the sheep but just make it a little lighter. The sheep will grow back its wool shortly so keep a herd around for your use. There is no skill requirement to shear a sheep. Once you have your wool, find a spinning wheel to turn the wool into balls of linen then find a loom to turn the balls of linen into bolts of wool.

25 wool --> 10 linen --> 4 bolts--> 200 wool cloth --> 100 bandages

Once you have your bolts of wool, they can be used the same as bolts of cotton cloth as per above.

Thread

To finish sewing any clothing items, you will require thread. Thread is obtained by picking flax plants then using the spinning wheel. Click on the flax while beside a spinning wheel and it will be made into thread. Picking flax requires lumberjacking skill.

Hides

Collecting and using hides is now the function of leatherworking. The leatherworker requires tailoring skill but contains all the items craftable using hides. The only difference is the tool required to access the leather menu.

Many monsters and animals have different hide colors you can collect. There are two ways to collect hides. When you have slayed the creature, you can use a dagger or skinning knife on the corpse and the hides (and any meat) will be cut off and placed into your backpack. Second, you can enable the .grab autocarve command which will automatically carve off any hides/meat when you are looting and place them into your loot bag.

Scissors

Scissors have two functions: to cut your own hair and to cut up any cloth or wool items into bandages.

Cutting Your Hair

Simply use the scissors on yourself. Your hair style will gradually get shorter and shorter until you are bald. This does not affect your hair color. To get your hair back again, use a hairbrush on yourself or visit a barber.

Creating Bandages

To create bandages, use the scissors on a cloth or wool item, bolts or folded cloth. The amounts for bolts and folded cloth are explained above in their sections, respectively. The amount of bandages you get is a fraction of the total material needed to make the item. You can also target a bag and it will cut up all clothing items in the bag. It will not cut up any bolts or folded cloth in the bag. Cutting up large amounts of clothing into bandages can be a bit slow.

  • You can not make bandages if the item is owned.
  • You can make bandages out of magical clothing. You do not get magical bandages, however, as all the magical threads will have been destroyed making the bandage.

Using Tailoring

Dye Tubs

There are two types of dye tubs: normal dye tubs and silk dye tubs. Normal dye tubs contain an assorted amount of plain-looking colors in a single dye tub. Unless you are working with the basic colors, the advanced colors require 70 tailoring to mix that color. Silk dye tubs require a high-level tailor to mix silk dyes (bought from the Tailor) into a dye tub. These are special colors, randomly produced when mixed, that may give a gloomy, dazzling or sparkly color.

Dye tubs are their default colors when first created/bought - a dull gray even though they are shown to be a darker color in the barrel.

To keep a color, select to make the color permanent. Only a high-level tailor can do this. Once it is permanent, anyone can use it regardless of skill.

The dye tubs will dye cloth (bolts or folded), clothes, boots, thigh boots, sandals, shoes, runes, bags and backpacks.

Dye tubs have a limited number of uses (depending on the skill of the tailor using it for the first time). Each time the dye tub is used, one use will be subtracted from the total. For stacked items such as folded or bolts of cloth, the appropriate number is used up from the dye tub. You can only dye folded or bolts of cloth if the dye tub is in your backpack. Dye tubs that are locked down at your house or inside containers will not dye stacked items.

Fortified Hats

Only tradeskill tailors can fortify hats. Plain hats can be fortified with an armor head piece. Take any hat, mask or head covering you have made and a helm of your choice. Use the sewing kit on hat then target the helm you will use to fortify with. Pass the skill check and you fortify the hat.

For example, you have a bear mask and a leather coif of protection. Double-click the sewing kit and target the bear mask then the leather coif. If your skill is high enough, you will end up with a fortified bear mask (a leather coif of protection).

You can fortify tailored hats, bear masks and deer masks. You can not fortify any tribal or orc masks.

Unfortifying Hats

You may unfortify a fortified hat if you are a tradeskill tailor. Only hats that have been fortified with the newer crafting skills may be unfortified (if it is an older fortified hat, you will get an 'unable to unfortify' message).

Item Condition

There are two ways to determine if a cloth or wool item requires repair. For a quick estimate on the current condition, use the sewing kit and select Item Condition. This will give you a quick idea how the item has gone through its wear and tear. The second method is to use your skillbook for a more detailed analysis of the item. Use the blacksmithy skill on the item. This in turn will do a tailoring skillcheck and if successful, tell you how damaged your clothes are.

Repairing Clothes

Repairing clothing requires a small amount of the original material needed to create the item. If the item is very damaged or in very bad shape, there is a chance the item can just fall apart before the tailor has a chance to repair it. For these items, it is recommended a repair kit be used.

Repairing Bone Armor

Repairing bone armor requires a sewing kit and tailoring skill. Bone armor requires bones (a necromancer reagent) to repair. When you target a bone item to repair, you will be informed of the tailoring skill required and the amount of bones needed. Those who are classed as necromancers will get a 10 skill point bonus reduction in the tailoring skill required. If the item is very damaged or in very bad shape, there is a chance the item can just fall apart before the tailor has a chance to repair it. For these items, it is recommended a repair kit be used.

Converting Clothing

Tradeskill tailors with a minimum 90 skill can convert robes and dresses. If the item is magical, only the highest tailors skilled in magery have a good chance of converting the item without destroying the magical weave in the threads. If you start to destroy the magical threads, you have a chance of destroying the magical weave and thus lowering the magical item's effectiveness. For example, a tempered dress of archery could be reduced to a rugged robe of archery if enough magical threads are destroyed.

NOTE: This option has been replaced by the manastone.

Bind Spellbooks

By using the leather punch, 5 of your favorite colored hides and some crushed tokens, you can add a special cover onto the spellbooks. The cover will be the same color as the hides. Look out for specially-colored hides during special events to collect.
